What are those stupid signs?

So you're walking down the hall and you see a white banner with the following printed on it:

or

The _ritish _re _oming! – P_ul Revere

or maybe

I c_n’t _et no _ati_f_ction – The Rollin_ _tone_

And you ask yourself, Why are there strange quotes all around the campus with missing letters?
